IGCA Announces Joel Sullivan, Ames, as the IGCA Executive Secretary, Effective Summer of 2016

Sullivan will become the 3rd Executive Secretary in 30-Year IGCA history (Jerry Wetzel, Mark Tiby). He will lead and direct the largest coaches association in Iowa. Please welcome Joel as he transitions into the role during the current school year.

Joel Sullivan is a 1987 graduate of Indianola High School. 1991 graduate from Central College. He has taught and coached high school sports for 25 years in track, volleyball, basketball, and football. Girls Basketball has been the one constant in his career, working as an assistant coach in Ida Grove for 4 years, Vinton-Shellsburg for 1 year, then becoming the head coach at Oskaloosa for 2 years. After marrying, he then went on to be an assistant coach at Ames High for three years before taking over as head coach where he still leads that program 15 years later. He has led the Little Cyclones to 5 State Tournament appearances, including a state runner-up finish in 2009.

He will become the 3rd Executive Secretary in the history of the IGCA. Ironically, the organization’s first Executive Secretary (Jerry Wetzel) was a teacher and Girls Basketball Coach in Indianola when Sullivan was in high school. “I’m excited to work for the IGCA and hope to continue the tradition of excellence that past directors Tiby and Wetzel demonstrated for more than 30 years.” Sullivan, an 18 year resident of Ames, is a a father of two sons: Lane (12) and Leo (8). His wife Aileen teaches Chemistry at Ames High and has served for over 20 years as an assistant Girls Track Coach.
