Basketball Assistant Coach of the Year-2005 Keith Peterson, Carroll Keith has been the assistant girls basketball coach for the last 20 years and has done a remarkable job. A great deal of our success has been due to him. He has a great rapport with the girls and has a great knowledge of the game. He has what it takes to be a head coach, but is very comfortable being an assistant. You won't find many individuals as dedicated as he is. Many times he is the first person to practice and the last one to leave. He opens the gym gives extra help to anyone who asks. He is willing to scout, work camps, go to clinics or whatever is needed or asked of him. He is the same way teaching his elementary PE classes, always willing to help. Keith is a Carroll High graduate, went to ISU and graduated with a Physical Education degree. He now teaches K-3 PE and all the little kids love him, as well, as former students; he treats them all very well. When Bill Evans, a long time teacher and official decided to retire, they asked him who would be a good replacement, he said, "We have an ISU graduate from Carroll who would do a good job." How right he was. He has been a great asset to the community as well as to our school. Keith's first years were as a 6 on 6 defensive coach. He did a great job helping us hold opponents down. Keith stayed with it as we transitioned to 5 on 5 in 1994-95. We still played good defense but had trouble scoring. He helped us get things going that season and we qualified for state. He was instrumental in helping us bring the 3A state title in '96 and '97, a return to state in '02 and a 21-3 record last year. I think he is a deserving individual and I wouldn't want anyone else working for me other than Coach Peterson.

Head Coach Tony Pappas says "Miss Burkholder has exhibited tremendous loyalty to our program on a daily basis. She has been a major factor in our success the last 16 years. She puts in a great deal of time at personal cost to herself. In addition, she has accompanied me and put on basketball clinics all over the United States." Leann is the first female to win this award and is an excellent choice to represent all of the female assistant coaches in the state. The Iowa Girls Coaches Association salutes Leann Burkholder! Ed Engstrand, Stanton Head coach Bruce Subbert says "Ed does many things at the elementary level such as hot shot competitions, tri-star competitions, free throw contests and organizes our fun night. In the summer Ed and his wife show horses around southwest Iowa. Ed typifies this award."
