Iowa Girls’ Coaches Association 2012 Assistant Basketball Coach of the Year Gary Dehoff, Hinton Community Gary Dehoff has spent the past 29 years as a basketball assistant. Besides Gary's teaching duties in Hinton, he helps with C-team, Junior Varsity and Varsity practices. He takes junior high teams to weekend tournaments, helps at team camps and summer strength and conditioning. Head Coach Joel Small calls Gary, "a die-hard basketball fan and cannot think of anyone more deserving than him for this award" Darlene Fuller, Central Decatur For 16 years, Darlene, who lives in the Central Decatur school district and works in Ankeny, drives the two hour round-trip to do something she loves, coaching. Darlene is an assistant to Curtis Boothe in basketball and also serves as assistant junior high volleyball coach. Coach Boothe says "Darlene never misses a day, her dedication and commitment is evident whenever you watch her work with the students. She is a tremendous asset to our team." Dan Neville, Bondurant Farrar Dan Neville is a career educator who has spent time as an assistant coach on and off for over 50 years. His 19 years in coaching starting in the 1960's at Waukee, Leon and Ballard. His various coaching duties included an assistant football, baseball and track coach. After a long career as a school administrator, Dan helped coach track at Collins Maxwell Baxter for five years. Currently, Dan is the assistant girls basketball coach at Bondurant Farrar with his son, Steve who is the head coach. Dan loves being around student athletes and the game of basketball. This year, he and his son guided Bondurant Farrar to the girls state basketball tournament, a career highlight. Mike Suther, Linn-Mar Mike Suther has been an assistant coach for 20 years. Currently in his 11th year as an assistant at Linn-Mar, Mike has contributed to 160 wins, 5 state tournament appearances and a state championship. Head Coach Michael Brandt calls Mike Suther dedicated to helping the players become better at basketball and more importantly, better people. |
