2010 E. Wayne Cooley “YOU CAN” Award Winners

Basketball and Bowling

ATHLETES:

Kadarenna Sales, Sophomore, Moulton-Udell

Kadarenna was our point guard this year. She did a good job of getting her team involved in the game and putting a lot of pressure on the other team with her defense.  She did a number of little things all year that made our team successful.  She also battled shin splints all year and played through the pain.  It was tough as some nights she would be hurting but she never complained and continued to lead by example.

Nominated by Jason Ogden, Head Girl's Basketball  Coach, Moulton-Udell

Rebecca Steen, Junior and Chelsey Harris, Senior, Moulton-Udell

Rebecca and Chelsey were outstanding leaders this year.  They were involved in the games even if they did not get all the minutes they wanted in each game.  Both of them have battled injuries each year and this year wasn't any different.  I know they were a great example to the younger kids and showed them how important every part of the team is.

Nominated by Jason Ogden, Head Girl's Basketball Coach, Moulton-Udell

Maggie Miller, Junior, Dunkerton Community School

Maggie is the type of player every coach would love to have on their team. She is willing to do the little things that are not always noticed.  She never complains and is always willing to do what is best for the team.  She has a great work ethic and a great attitude towards basketball and life.  Maggie suffered a knee injury late in the season and I am sure she will work hard to be back for next year.

Nominated by  Jason Yessack, Head Girl's Basketball Coach, Dunkerton Community Schools

Allie Cataldo, Senior, Madrid   High School

Allie was the lone senior on the Madrid basketball team this past season.  Although her team has not had much success in the wins and losses the past couple of years, Allie has proven herself as an outstanding leader for the Tigers.  Allie plays a majority of the game each night, and exemplifies the word hustle.  She is always the first to dive to the floor for a loose ball, and is always in the mix defensively.  On a team that consists of nine freshman and sophomores she is an outstanding vocal and physical leader.  I have seen her on many occasions come to the aid of a teammate before, during and after the game.  She is always challenging and encouraging her younger less experienced teammates.  She plays every second of every game as hard as she can and leaves every ounce of her 5'2" frame on the floor for her team.  I feel Allie would be an outstanding choice for the E. Wayne Cooley "You Can" Award.

Nominated by Steve Glenn, Head Girl's Basketball Coach, Van Meter  High School

Amber Suhr, Senior, Wapsie Valley Community Schools

Amber Suhr has shown outstanding character and work ethic during her high school career. As a junior she saw limited varsity time and asked if she could play on the sophomore team so she could continue to improve.  In a time when kids will sometimes quit because of lack of playing time Amber asked to play down a level just for a chance to play.  Going into her senior year, Amber was a constant at open gyms, summer league and team camps.  This year Amber started every game for a conference championship team that finished 21-2.  Many players are concerned with stats and averages, but not Amber. She knew what she was capable of and understood her strengths and weaknesses.  Even though she was not the star of the team she was well respected by her teammates.  Amber is a leader on and off the court.

Nominated by Justin Davie, Head Girl's Basketball Coach, Wapsie Valley High School

Hannah Pickart, Senior, Benton Community High School

When I encounter students in my daily teaching, I find there are two categories: worker or watcher.  Hannah is a worker.  Time and time again, both in the classroom and on the basketball court, Hannah Pickart has proven herself to be a student deserves every ounce of playing time she has had this season.  Hannah will not make all-state, all-district, or even all-conference, but her importance to our team was absolutely essential to our success.  Hannah was a vocal leader for our team and found a way to make everyone feel welcome.  Hannah is a student who does not settle for what others might think is acceptable; she works until she pleases herself.  She sets high standards and expects herself and her teammates to achieve them.  With her positive attitude Hannah will find an opportunity to succeed in any situation.

Nominated by Laurie Donald, Head Girl's Basketball Coach, Benton Community Schools

 Amy  Stoll, Senior, Spalding Catholic

Amy injured her ACL during her junior season and missed more than half the season.  In her senior year of volleyball she required surgery for a meniscus tear.  Amy was an inspiration, fighting back and rehabbing from two knee injuries.  She graduates as points leader with 810, and is second in assists and steals.  She is a model for overcoming adversity and demonstrated superior leadership skills.

Nominated by  Scott Willman, Girls Basketball Coach, Spalding Catholic

COACHES

Andy Hoefer, Boy's and Girl's Bowling Coach, Dubuque Senior High School

Since becoming the Bowling Coach at Dubuque Senior, the boy's and girl's program has went from the beginning stages to championship levels.  Andy has built both programs so now they expect to be winners and both programs have high participation levels which is involving many students.

At this point, the combined record for the boy's and girl's varsity and junior varsity over the past three seasons is 156-32.  This shows the hard work and commitment to the program that his young bowlers have given to Coach Hoefer.

He has laid the foundation for a winning program.

Nominated by I.G.C.A.

Justin Davie, Head Girl's Basketball Coach, Wapsie Valley Community Schools

Since becoming the head coach five seasons ago, the Wapsie Valley Girls’ Basketball program has continued to grow.  In the past three seasons, Wapsie has won 50+ games and played in two regional finals.  Coach Davie's comitment to the program has helped establish Wapsie Valley as a very successful girls basketball program year in and year out.
