2004 IGCA Volleyball Assistant Coaches of the Year

Janie Montgomery, Camanche

Number of Years Coaching: 26 years (5 as varsity and 21 as assistant) Teaching Assignment and other duties: Physical education and assistant girls' track coach

Janie started girls' sports at Camanche in the mid-70's literally. She was the lone coach for volleyball, track and softball for a number of years. Her volleyball squads qualified for the state tournament in both 1973 and 1974. When we started our girls' basketball program in 1974, she gave up her varsity volleyball position to become an assistant coach for basketball. She continued as head coach in softball and track and accepted an assistant role in volleyball. She still currently coaches as an assistant in both volleyball and track. I Janie is an incredible role model for our female athletes. She goes out of her way to make sure they enjoy their sports experiences. For years, the girls have treasured her home made awards and plaques and certificates. She has often spent her own money when our athletic budget couldn't subsidize something we needed for one team or another. She is my assistant in volleyball and every day she brings in snacks and treats for the girls to energize them for the practice that lies ahead of them. She pays for these things out of her own pocket. She writes congratulatory notes to players and parents and community members to continue the goodwill of the volleyball program long after players have graduated and gone on with their lives. The players adore her. She is always the one teacher/coach that former students and athletes want to touch base with when they are back in town for visits or vacations. She started the tradition of Senior Nights and made them a night to remember for decades worth of players and their families. She will do anything I or any other coach asks her to do if it is at all possible. She announces the winter sports activities. She supervises open gyms and weightlifting in the summer months. She has been a huge asset/resource for a number of male coaches working with our female athletes over the years. She always champions the virtues of our athletes while demanding that they act in a manner that deserves her praise. Our district would not have enjoyed all the success we have had in the last 30 years in girls' sports if it weren't for Janie Montgomery. Janie retired from teaching last spring, but continues as an assistant coach in both track and volleyball.

Nominated by Mark Cremer, Varsity Volleyball Coach

Donna Ellingson Lake Mills

Number of Years Coaching: Head Coach (11 seasons); Junior High/Middle School Coach (14 seasons); Assistant Coach (8 seasons); City Park and Rec. Coach, adult and youth volleyball programs; a total of 24 years, all at Lake Mills in three different positions.

Teaching Assignment: 6th grade teacher for years before moving into head librarian position 4 years ago.

Donna deserves this award for a number of reasons. She gives tirelessly to the girl athlete. She is a strong advocate for our female athletes. Some of the things that Donna does for the girls include making quilts for them to raffle off for fundraiser's, working at all of our camps for free, helping players with homework, provides awards for them by making our season ending certificates, and creating displays that honor the girls throughout the building. Donna has written our stats program and organizes our managers for score keeping and stat keeping at each match. All of our youth coaches stay in close contact with Donna because they know that she will always make herself available to help the younger girls. It wouldn't be unusual to find her in the gym helping a parent coach their 4th grade team on their way to a booster club tournament.

Donna also takes care of all of our training needs. When a player is injured she researched the injury and finds information to help us get that player healthy and playing again. The girls know that Coach Ellingson truly cares about them and is always available to help them, whether it is a classroom issue or a volleyball skill they need help with.

Donna is more than my assistant coach. She is my partner in education and I have grown from her involvement with the Lake Mills volleyball program. Nineteen total years of working as a head coach, middle school coach, volunteer to our 4-6 grade park and rec program, and the last 8 as the program's assistant coach have earned her this recognition. The young ladies that have went through our program are better people because of Coach Ellingson,. She has helped make the female high school athlete in Lake Mills a role model for all our future bulldogs, male or female.

Nominated by Jim Boehmer, Head Volleyball Coach Lake Mills
